What SIP hits the first ₹50 lakh?
₹50 lakh is the first number that changes how loud a job loss feels. It is also small enough that people under-save because it “looks easy.”

Fifty lakh is a nervous-system upgrade
Siliguri relatives treat ₹50 lakh like a lottery ticket. It is a decade of SIPs that did not get raided for a wedding DJ.
₹50 lakh in 10 years at 12% is about ₹21,700 a month. In 12 years that falls near ₹16,000. In 15 years, ~₹10,200.
That is the actual question. Not the slogan on the brochure.
Someone in Siliguri will still tell you a story that skips the EMI night. Ignore that person.
The spreadsheet is the easy half. The debit surviving April is the rest.
At 10% for 10 years you need ~₹24,400. If you cannot say that out loud, you do not get extra years from the universe. You pick a later date.
Discomfort here is a signal. A 15% slider is not.
Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.
Eight years is tight; twelve is kinder
Write why you want ₹50 lakh: house gap, buffer, career risk. Vague trophies get spent.
Run 10% and 12%. If only 14% “works,” the date is wrong.
Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹21,700 × 120 months = ₹26 lakh of your cash for a ₹50 lakh sketch. The other half is time and units bought in ugly months..
Round, optimistic inputs are how people sleep until the third bounce.
When the folio crosses ~₹35 lakh, start a glide: new SIP can stay equity; the pile nearest the goal date should get boring.
Park the last 2 years of this goal in debt/hybrid once you are close. Equity is a great engine. It is a poor ATM.
If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.
Milestones people inflate on LinkedIn
Redeeming at ₹48 lakh because gold jumped that week. You were two SIPs from the name you gave the goal.
Five funds of ₹4,000 to “diversify” a 50-lakh journey. That is clutter.
Counting EPF as this ₹50 lakh. EPF already has a job. This pile should be extra.
The internet will sell you a one-line rule. One-line rules do not pay EMIs.
Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.
Re-run the numbers when salary, rate, or the goal date moves. That is the whole maintenance.
Siliguri is full of people who had a decent plan in 2022 and a folklore in 2026. The folklore started as an unopened app.
Hit 50, then decide 1 crore
Need it in ~10 years and can pay ~₹22k: one diversified SIP, review twice a year.
Only ₹12k spare: 15 years or a step-up, not a fake 16% rate.
Hit 50 lakh: do not auto-extend to 1 crore without a new date. Celebrate, then re-brief.
If a card is revolving, this page is homework, not a green flag to invest more.
Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.
If cash is tight this quarter, shrink the plan. Do not vanish from it.
A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.
₹21,700 vs ₹10,200
₹21,700 / 10y / 12% ≈ ₹50 lakh. Contribution ~₹26 lakh.
₹10,200 / 15y / 12% is the calmer twin. Same destination, less monthly theatre.
Miss the first 2 years and squeeze into 8: SIP climbs past ₹30k. That is the charge for snooze.
Those are planning numbers, not a promise from a mutual fund or a bank RM.
If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.
The bear version is the one you should be able to explain at dinner.
Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.
Take the annoying debit. Nickname it later
Fifty lakh is allowed to be a finish line.
If you keep moving the posts, you will always feel poor next to a chart.
Boring consistency beats a dramatic restart every January.
Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.
A Siliguri cousin who wants a shortcut can get this page. They cannot get your leftover salary.
And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
Use this to think. Use a human with a licence before you transfer.

Should this money stay 100% equity till the end?
Not in the last couple of years if the date is real. Engines and ATMs are different animals.
Is ₹50 lakh enough for a house?
In some towns as down payment plus buffer. In many metros it is a start, not a full flat. Run a home EMI calculator separately.
