Is ELSS SIP better than PPF for 80C?

80C is a ₹1.5 lakh lid. ELSS can fall. PPF cannot. That is the whole argument.

Is ELSS SIP better than PPF for 80C?

Skip to the calculator below this article

80C is a bucket, not a personality

Section 80C is a bucket with a lid of ₹1.5 lakh. ELSS and PPF both fit. Only one of them can crash 30% in a year.

PPF is a government rate around 7% with a 15-year lock and EEE tax treatment. ELSS is equity with a 3-year lock and market moods.

Start there. Marketing copy can wait its turn.

Chennai kitchens already know this. Relatives on the group chat are slower.

It is arithmetic plus behaviour. The arithmetic is easier.

If you will sell ELSS the week Nifty is red, you did not pick ELSS. You picked a panic button with a tax receipt.

When the gap looks ugly, the gap is doing its job.

A dated goal in a small-cap fund is how holidays become credit-card stories.

₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years (planning sketch)

PPF is the floor. ELSS is a range with bruises.

Same rupees, two very different locks

Write the 80C leftover after EPF, life cover, and tuition fees. That leftover is the ELSS-vs-PPF fight, not the full CTC.

Ask how many years till the money is allowed to hurt. Under 7 years, PPF or a shorter debt product wins more often than ego.

Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹1.5 lakh/year for 15 years at ~7% PPF versus the same in ELSS at a 10–12% planning rate—and a 30% drawdown year.

If the input only works in a good year, it is a wish, not a plan.

Then pick a SIP date that actually debit after salary, because a bounced ELSS SIP still wastes a month of 80C room.

Use PPF for the rupees you must see again. Use ELSS for the rupees you can leave untouched through a bad calendar year.

If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.

The usual 80C self-goals

Dumping the whole ₹1.5 lakh into ELSS in March because a YouTube uncle said “equity for the win.”

Treating PPF as useless because 7% looks small next to a 2017 small-cap screenshot.

Forgetting ELSS units older than 3 years can be sold while new SIPs are still locked. It is a ladder, not a vault.

The internet will sell you a one-line rule. One-line rules do not pay EMIs.

Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.

When the salary or the date moves, reopen the calculator. Do not recycle last year’s PDF.

Chennai is full of people who had a decent plan in 2022 and a folklore in 2026. The folklore started as an unopened app.

Same ₹12,500 monthly, different 15-year landings

Not a promise. A planning spread.

A split that does not need a guru

EPF already chewing most of 80C: skip the ELSS vs PPF drama and run a taxable SIP outside 80C.

Need a known corpus at year 15 for a parent or a house gap: fill PPF first.

Have 15+ years and a real emergency fund: ELSS SIP of ₹5,000–₹8,000 plus PPF for the rest is a boring adult split.

Clear the 16% fire, keep oats, then argue about this. That sequence is not optional.

Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.

Small and dated beats heroic and cancelled.

A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.

₹12,500 a month for 15 years

₹1.5 lakh a year into PPF ~7.1% for 15 years lands near ₹38 lakh. Same rupees as a ₹12,500 ELSS SIP at 12% sketches near ₹63 lakh.

That ₹25 lakh gap is not free. It is paid in nights when the ELSS folio is down ₹8–10 lakh on paper.

If you invested only in year 15 panic and sold ELSS, PPF quietly beat you. Behaviour is the second TER.

None of this is a guaranteed NAV or a sanctioned loan. It is a map.

If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.

Stress it at a worse rate. If it still stands, you can live with the nicer years too.

Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.

Is ELSS the right 80C tool for you

If the first two bars are weak, keep more in PPF.

File the proof, then ignore the trophy

Max 80C once. Then stop shopping for a morally superior tax saver.

The form-16 line is identical. The 2039 corpus is not.

The unsexy month-on-month debit still beats a new “system” in April.

Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.
